Lightning strikes

Thunderstrikes around the world

Lightning and thunder

Lightning lightens the world quite often. See the numbers on a worldwide scale:

How far away is a lightning strike?

Since light travels with light speed, we can see a lighning strike immediately. Light speed is 300000 km per second!! Thunder occurs at the same moment. But the speed of sound is much lower. It takes some seconds for the sound to arrive at our ears. Sound speed depends a little on temperature and humidity and is about 340 m per second. That means one km in 3 seconds.

We can use this to have a good guess of the distance in which a lightning strikes. In the moment we see the lightning strike, we start to count. We count slowly. Try to count by the second. When we hear the thunderstrike, we stop counting. Then we divide the number by three and get the distance in kilometers.

Example: Lightning strikes. We start to count. Then thunder strikes when we have arrived at nine. That would mean a distance of about 3 km.

Prefering miles? A Mile is about 1.6 km. That means: Do not divide by 3 but by 5 and the result is in miles.
